Your Grandmother’s Buttons / 1

One thing we love about talking to our customers is hearing how so many have similar stories of digging through their grandmother’s buttons. That’s why we’ve asked you to share your story. What kind of memories do the buttons bring back for you? Do you have one treasured one or a huge collection?

This old tin of buttons is from one of our customers in California. The floral tin is filled with a collection of buttons from her mother and grandmother that spark a memory of digging through the buttons ask a kid. Our owner Susan Davis took a quick glimpse and could easily spot some special buttons: 1950′s West German glass, 1940′s crystal, 1920′s bone underwear, and plenty of 1960′s plastic. Thanks so much for sharing!

Finally Friday!

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend ahead of them – and to start it off right we chose our Lady Washington Necklace as our Friday Favorite. This was the first piece we designed after we bought the remaining stock of the American Pearl Button Company, which manufactured buttons from Mississippi River shells from 1908 to 1964 under the name Lady Washington Pearls. Each of these buttons went through a 16-step process to be harvested, drilled, split, carved and polished into the lustrous and perfect buttons you see here.

Pair it with the Lady Washington earrings and a sweet pastel dress; the perfect Easter outfit!

Easter Buttons

Easter is almost near, so we thought we would share a few buttons from Susan’s collection that have an Easter/Spring theme

SPORTING BUTTONS
Sporting buttons are generally from the late 18th century through most of the 19th century. Commonly worn on jackets of men riding to hounds before hunts, they were also later worn on country clothing for riding or shooting. The metal buttons were usually in sets with several related designs.

GOOFIES/REALISTICS
Goofies got their name in the early 1940′s for their realistic depiction of the object. Generally in plastic or glass, the pictured sets of bonnet goofies are made from glass from the 1940′s.

CELLULOID
The elaborate floral wreath buttons below are made from celluloid, one of the first plastics created. From the 1940′s, these realistic buttons were designed to be cheery to lighten people’s spirits during the Depression.
